On a national team shirt, each star above the crest stands for one World Cup won. Brazil wears five, Germany and Italy four, Argentina three, France and Spain two. The rule looks simple — yet it has one famous exception, and it does not apply to clubs at all.
How many stars for which nation?
One star, one world title. The most decorated men's national teams:
- Brazil, 5 stars — 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.
- Germany and Italy, 4 stars — Germany in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014; Italy in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.
- Argentina, 3 stars — 1978, 1986 and 2022.
- France and Spain, 2 stars — France in 1998 and 2018, Spain in 2010 and 2026.
- England, 1 star — the home triumph of 1966.
Why does Uruguay wear four stars for two World Cups?
This is football's most debated exception. Uruguay won two World Cups, in 1930 and 1950, but displays four stars: the federation adds the Olympic titles of 1924 and 1928, from an era when the Olympic tournament served as the world championship and was recognised as such. FIFA does not contest the stars, without treating them as world titles either.
What about stars on club shirts?
Here there is no universal rule: each league has its own convention, which is why the same number of stars means different things from one country to another.
- Italy — one star per ten league titles. Juventus wears three, Inter two, Milan one.
- Germany — a tiered scale: three titles earn one star, five earn two, ten earn three, twenty earn four. Bayern Munich is the only club showing five.
- Elsewhere — some clubs count continental rather than domestic titles, others use no stars at all. Without knowing the local convention, the number alone tells you nothing.
How to read the stars on a shirt
First check their position: above the crest, they count titles. Anywhere else on the shirt, they are usually a graphic motif with no meaning. Then check whether it is a national team or a club: the former reads directly, the latter depends entirely on the league.
