From the Furia Roja of 1920 to the second star in 2026, Spain's red shirt tells a century of football history. A look back at the kits that carried La Roja, from their first Olympic Games to World Cup glory.
The origins: the birth of the Furia Roja (1920-1960)
Spain played their first international matches at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, taking home the silver medal. That tournament gave rise to the nickname "Furia Roja", the red fury, drawn as much from their playing style as from the colour of the shirt. Bright red paired with blue shorts became the side's visual identity in those years, and never left.
Red and blue: the identity settles (1960-1990)
In 1964 Spain won the European Nations' Cup at home, at the Santiago Bernabéu, beating the USSR 2-1. That generation's plain red shirt remains one of the most understated in La Roja's history. In 1982 the country hosted the World Cup and the kit was everywhere, worn by a team that would not get past the second round. Two years later Spain lost the European Championship final to France.
The 1994 shirt, a cult piece
The shirt worn at the 1994 World Cup in the United States has become one of the most sought-after by collectors. Graphic patterns, a loose cut, bold colours: it captures nineties aesthetics better than almost any other. Spain went out in the quarter-finals, but the shirt long outlived the result — it is now one of the most requested retro pieces.
The golden era, 2008-2012
Between 2008 and 2012 Spain achieved what no other national side had managed: the Euros, the World Cup and the Euros back to back. It started in Vienna in 2008 with a 1-0 win over Germany, scored by Fernando Torres. The cycle closed in 2012 with a 4-0 demolition of Italy in the final. In between came the first world title.
The navy blue shirt of 2010
It is a detail many forget: Spain were not in red on the night of their first world title. In the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands, La Roja wore their navy blue away shirt. Andrés Iniesta's goal in the 116th minute turned that dark kit into one of the most symbolic in Spanish football, and the first to carry a star above the crest.
2024-2026: back on top, and the second star
After a decade of transition, Spain became European champions again in 2024, beating England 2-1 in Berlin. Two years later they won the 2026 World Cup, defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final after knocking France out in the semi-final. A second star joined the one above the crest — and gave rise to the "2 stars" shirts of the 2026-2027 season.
