Organising 5-a-side with friends: teams, formations, routine

The practical guide to 5-a-side with friends: 10 players plus one or two subs, an uncontested random draw, a simple shape (1-2-1 or 2-2) and a fixed weekly slot.

Organising 5-a-side with friends: teams, formations, routine

Organising a 5-a-side comes down to three things: the pitch and the slot, the teams, and the routine. Book a fixed slot (same day, same time every week), pick the teams by random draw so nobody can moan, and build small rituals that make people want to come back. Everything else — the formation, the rotations, the tactical pointers — takes two minutes once those three are locked in. Here is the full method.

How many players do you need?

For 5v5 you need 10 on the pitch — but never stop at 10 invites. There is always a last-minute drop-out or two: aim for 11 or 12 confirmed names to be sure of kicking off with 10. Extra players are not a problem, they are the ideal: one or two subs per team allow rotations every 5 to 10 minutes, and everyone finishes the game with legs left.

If you drop to 8, do not force a stretched 5v5: switch to 4v4 and the game stays tight and fun. Below 8, a 2v2 round-robin or a rondo beats a lopsided match every time.

How do you pick fair teams?

This is the moment that kills more kickabouts than anything else. The three classic methods:

  • Captains picking — it works, but it is slow, and whoever gets picked last starts the game annoyed. Avoid it when the group mixes abilities and egos.
  • Splitting the two best players first — a sound instinct, but you still have to share out the other eight, and that is where the arguing starts.
  • A random draw — fast and beyond dispute: nobody can blame anybody, chance decided. If the sides turn out uneven, swap one player at half-time and it is sorted.

For the draw itself, our lineup builder has a team picker built in: paste your player list (one per line or comma-separated), choose 2, 3 or 4 teams, and it shuffles everyone randomly with at most one player's difference between sides. A copy button formats the result for WhatsApp, and each team gets its own pre-filled lineup link. Free, no account needed.

Which formation for 5-a-side: 1-2-1 or 2-2?

In 5-a-side, two formations cover 95% of what you need, keeper included:

  • The 1-2-1 (diamond) — one player sitting at the back, two wide, one up front. It is the most balanced shape: the pitch is covered for width and depth, and the two wide players link defence and attack. The right default choice.
  • The 2-2 (box) — two at the back, two up front. Dead simple to explain, perfect when the group is new or nobody fancies defending alone. Its flaw: the middle is empty, so the four outfielders have to talk or the pitch splits in two.

Then there is the keeper question: fixed (a volunteer, or a rotation every 10 minutes) or flying — meaning the player nearest the goal drops back whenever your team loses the ball. The flying keeper needs more communication but keeps everyone involved. And with a bench of 3, rotations keep turning without anyone standing around for 20 minutes.

The lineup builder offers both 5-a-side shapes (1-2-1 and 2-2, with a bench of 3) plus 11-a-side lineups with 6 formations — handy when the group graduates to Sunday league. We walk through all of it in our guide to the online lineup builder.

How do you keep the group going?

A 5-a-side that lasts a season runs on habits, not motivation:

  • A fixed slot — Thursday 8pm, full stop. A slot that moves every week dies within a month, because every week you have to poll everyone again.
  • A dedicated WhatsApp group — for the game only. The attendance poll goes out on Monday, the teams drop the night before.
  • Lineups shared in advance — send each team its link the night before: the link preview shows the pitch with the names on it, everyone knows where they are playing before they arrive, and the pre-match trash talk starts itself.
  • Small stakes — a season-long scorer chart, losers buy the drinks, a "shirt of the month" for the best player. Nothing heavy: just enough to give the fixture a story.

Three simple tactical pointers for beginners

  • Press in pairs, never alone — one player charging out on his own gets beaten by a single pass and leaves a 4v3 behind him. The first man steers, the second comes to double up.
  • The player on the ball always needs two options — 5-a-side is a game of triangles. If your teammate has the ball, show for it at a passing angle, not behind him.
  • Nobody dribbles the length of the pitch — losing the ball in your own half is a direct chance for the other team. Play out cleanly, save the dribbling for their half.

To explain an instruction to the group, the builder's tactics mode works like a coach's tablet: drag the players anywhere on the pitch and draw with a pen or arrows in 3 colours — a two-man press or a build-up pattern takes ten seconds to show.

Frequently asked questions

How many players do you need for 5-a-side?

+
10 to play 5 versus 5, plus one or two substitutes to absorb last-minute dropouts and keep everyone fresh. With 12, everyone plays and nobody burns out.

How do you make fair teams without upsetting anyone?

+
A random draw is the only uncontested method: it is fast and nobody gets picked last. An online draw that generates a lineup link per team lets you send the teams to the WhatsApp group before anyone reaches the pitch.

Which formation should you play in 5-a-side?

+
The 1-2-1 (diamond) is the most balanced: one striker, two wide players who defend, one at the back. The 2-2 (box) is simpler for beginners but leaves the middle open. Either way, a fixed goalkeeper makes everything easier.
